Day 55, July 9, 2014

Zero.

I slept in and went through an hour thunderstorm. My tent held up even though I shoulda took more time pitching it.

I woke up and met a few past friends. I was grateful to see them!

We ordered pizza in the evening and I relaxed.

Hooch scored trail magic of four pies! He went to a fancy restaurant and a lady bought him and his 3 other AT friends slices of pie. Glad I was one of the 3 others :).

Applie pie :).

Day 53, July 7, 2014

I slept in til 10 a.m. at Mallory and Chris' place. I updated a few days if blog and went to the store. I attained two new pairs of socks and toothpaste. My previous socks were blown all but my More Heart Than Scars socks.

I arrived back in Harpers Ferry and took several hours to learn about the history here. The history was invaluable. I learned about John Brown's raid, slavery and the civil war. It was great to learn more about America's past time.

I left at 4:30 p.m. and only hiked 6.3 AT miles.

I stayed at Ed Garvey shelter and it was a nice two stories shelter. All new company at the shelter. Approximately 15 peeps.

Water was .4 down from camp. Also large nuts smacked the shelter roof!

Day 52, June 6, 2014

Mallory and Chris informed us that they received an email for a house showing the previous night. We woke up at 8:15 a.m. and thoroughly cleaned their home by 10 a.m. We had 45 minutes to kill before heading to the Mormon Church. I have had the privilege of experiencing many denominations of Christianity. This has made me a more educated individual and Christian. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mormon Church. I must say I was the worst dressed in the Church as well. However, things like that don't phase me. I'm not at church to look good, however, it was the worst I've dressed for church. I mean thru hikers don't carry church clothes in their packs. It would be to much weight....right!? Lol.

After church we had a splendid lunch. Mallory's brother, wife and kids came over. It was a full house of kids and they treated me like family.

Later two Mormon elders came over and shared prayer and conversations. It gave me another opportunity to learn more about the Mormon culture. It was another great experience. I contacted friends and family all evening. Thanks for all your support! I value all of you who are supporting me and following my AT hike with IHOP!

Day 51, July 5, 2014

Hiking out of the Blackburn ATC Center was easy. I hiked 20 minutes miles for about 12 miles and arrived at Harpers Ferry WV! The Potomac and Shenandoah River were all beautiful.

The history of Harpers Ferry was endless! I soaked up as much as possible but I will return to Harpers Ferry for history lessons, fishing and relaxation in the future!

I got my picture at the ATC HQ. my mom sent me a resupply package from home that I prepped and I was grateful. I also purchased a $40 AT membership to support the AT, maintenance and all the volunteers who care so diligently for the AT. It's the least I could do since the Appalachian Trail will provide invaluable lessons/experiences throughout my life. I was the 61st thru hiker as far as alternative hikers. Alternative hikers are those who complete a thru hike other than NOBO or SOBO straight thru. There were 1090 NOBO hikers and only 3 SOBO hikers that have came through. It is extremely early for SOBO hikers to arrive at Harpers Ferry. Also, on the NOBO hikers I saw many who had aqua blazed, blue blazed or yellow blazed. Thus, they had skipped a bit of the trail. However, it's their hike and the thru hike certificate is for 2000 miles, not ~2180 total miles. Blue blazing is taking a trail that short cuts around the main AT. Aqua blaze is canoeing around the trail. Typically done in the Shenandoah's and can be done over 50-100 miles or so. Yellow blaze is taking a hitch further up the trail and avoiding sections of the AT. However. Hike your own Hike!

I walked another .6 on the AT down to lower Historic Harpers Ferry. I experienced it and called Joe and Catherine. They has gotten off at earlier mileage due to Catherine roughing her knee up on a fall. She is well, and will continue her thru hike with Joe. Her sister lives with her husband and kids in Charles Town. Joe and Chris, who is Mallory's husband, and Mallory is Catherine's sister picked me up around 7 p.m. in Harpers Ferry. This was awesome because I hadn't showered since Waynesboro.

I was able to get a nice bath :). They later took us to more fireworks in Jefferson County. Mallory prepped amazing snacks and we watched the fireworks from the bed of the F250 :).

I slept on their couch and it felt so amazing!

Day 50, July 4, 2014

I slept in til about 10 a.m. I was informed by the caretakers and ATC Board Chairwoman @ the Blackburn ATC Center that the Washington DC fireworks could be seen in the distance. They were also grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for the hikers. I asked politely if I could take a zero day and spend the evening with them. Of course they said yes.

I spent time with an a older through hiker whos name was On Purpose. We both decided to stay for the day. He shared amazing wisdom with me. I learned that I need to start living more in the Now. Happiness should be now. A lifestyle of connecting closer to my heart, trying to live a life of love from the heart should overwhelm the mind the majority of the time. Yes planning for the future is important, but all we are guaranteed is now. I have always done a descent job of cherishing the now, but his perspective provided a greater comprehension of the now and living more with the heart of love. On purpose was a great individual who has many stories I will share in the future. He also had a flute he played in the distance throughout the day. He was impressive on the flute. He told me he bought ~21 flutes off a friend who had passed away. He payed $3000 for them between him and his friend. On purpose and his friend will give all these flutes away in the future to people they meet in different places who have the ambition to learn how to play a flute. What an awesome story and neat idea!

On Purpose and I cleaned the grill as a means to give back. We cleaned it spotless and the caretakers were grateful. However, we were the most grateful and helped out as much as we could in return. Dishes, setting the table, etc.

I was blessed with amazing burgers, hot dogs, watermelon, sweet tea, chips and much more. There were also like ten pies. Blackberry, Blueberry, Apple Pie, etc. A local bakery associated with StoneyBrook farms brought a homemade strawberry pie. This farm is operated by the 12 tribes. I had an awesome experience with the 12 tribes in Damascus at the start of my hike. I will visit their farm in Rutland Vermont. Some people would say they are a cult. I would say they are giving people with their heart who have blessed me. It's not my place to judge. They also support   Hiddenite in NC. I also enjoyed Hiddenite gem mine as a kid and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a great place for adventurous kids to go and learn more about geology, etc.

The fireworks were beautiful and I saw the Washington Monument with binoculars and an awesome homemade telescope. I saw probably 12 town, cities and DCs' fireworks. It was comical because about 20-25 people stayed overnight and we were all moving in a linear line to get great views. We all laughed and made jokes! What an amazing experience!

Another night I was blessed to sleep on the amazing wrap around screen porch!

My bench to sleep on with my blue sleeping bag.

Blackburn AT Center. My wet clothes drying on the picnic table.

All are shucking corn. I took a quick photo break. On Purpose on far right. Ridge runner on left. Care taker of the facilty second from left. Cindy Wilcox and her husband in the middle. She gave me her new state of the art black diamond head lamp due to mine no longer working. She was a sweet lady and I tried to avoid taking. She persisted out of the kindness in her heart! She said I needed it more than her. She also works at REI. Thanks so much Cindy! The trail always seems to give.

Homemade potato salad and you know the rest! All endless! Thanks so much to the Blackburn ATC Center.

Dessert. Lots of variety.

Day 49, July 3, 2014

Today was a start of what they call the Virginia Roller Coaster which is 13.5 miles. I started at 8 a.m. and completed 10 miles by noon. I felt great and took a hour and thirty minute break to dry my sweaty clothes. My clothes were soaked from walking through the wet shrubs the precious day.

I left for David Lesser Shelter which would be a 21.1 mile day. A saw in the distance a nasty storm and checked my phone for weather. I had service and saw the rough thunderstorms on the Doppler. I pushed on and did I get rocked!

A mile in I received a downpour, hail and blasting lightening. I threw my pack down, trusted my pack cover and pulled my tent footprint over my head. I wrapped my boots in the tyvek type material and took a beating for 30 minutes. I was already soaked but my gear and my pack stayed dry. I felt cooler and it felt like a shower.  I was in great spirits and ready to go on.

Somehow after the storm passed, thirty minutes later another storm rolled in behind me. This storm settled in and was with me for the rest of the evening. I would guess about 2-3 hours. I was soaked and mentally weak until I stopped early at Blackburn AT Center. When I say mentally weak I was miserable. This was by far my toughest moments on the trail at this point. However, blessings ALWAYS change misery!

This was the best decision I made all day. I met a beautiful log cabin with a wrap around screen front porch, a mountain lion soda, endless spaghetti dinner, fresh salad and a bench to sleep on. I was in heaven and went to bed on the screen porch dry.

17.9 AT miles hiked

IHOP and I tackling the roller coaster!

Still chose to hike. Wouldn't have been a bad idea to stay at Bears Den Hostel. I was .2 from it.

Approaching 1000 miles. I have to subtract 466 prior to Damascus.

IHOP and I make it to the 1000 mile marker.

Take 2!

Quick make shift shelter.

I sat in the middle and didn't use my hiking pole.
