Day 3 AT May 18, 2014

IDamascus, perfect weather to begin my journey with IHOP. Linked up with Zach and Wendy. Mom saw us off and came back to Damascus because Joe left his wallet in the car. Fell right out of his pocket in moms vehicle! Thanks for being the best mom in the world. Quick prayer under arch ways then began hiking with Wendy and Zach. Joe and Catherine waited for Joe's brotha Thomas to arrive to Damascus. Wendy and Zack hiked with me for a few miles taking pictures and videos while reminiscing about IHOP. Check out More Heart Than Scars for the video. Hiked about 9 miles & 8.5 were the AT. The rhododendron were spectacular! Saw my first worm snake? Black with a yellow ring around his neck. That sucker was a whopping 10.4 inches long.

Stayed in Sanders shelter and ate well! We collected so much firewood we couldn't burn it all. ~20 folks at camp. Cool peeps!! People couldn't believe how great we collected firewood. I was with two Eagle Scouts Joe Hiatt and Thomas Hiatt. Killed it!

Perfect stocked trout streams. Shoulda fished but wanted to focus on hiking.

Took a shower early morning and used paper towels for my towel. A man commented that we were hiker trash. Of course he was as well.

Sanders shelter.

Chestnut. Section hiker locating and preserving chestnut trees. Counts all the chestnut trees and identifies longitude and latitude of big ones. Evidently chestnut trees are close to being extinct in a way...?
