Went to bed at 6 p.m. the night before. It is truly amazing what a good nights rest will do! 7.3 AT miles and 8.1 miles total. Today was wonderful! We had beautiful weather and crossed a swinging bridge. Went to Trent's Grocery and had a Swiss bacon burger with a large chili cheese fry. Grabbed a frost Gatorade and recharged my phone. Purchased my $4 VA National Park fishing stamp. Catherine and Joe both wanted a watermelon. I did as well. We had the bright idea of taking it to Dismal Falls 1.7 miles on the AT plus a .5 hike back to the trail...How much does a large watermelon weigh? Who Cares!
We received a ride back to the AT with a guy who had bullet casings in the bed of his Tacoma. I complemented him on being a shooter and he showed me his Smith and Wesson 40 with a laser attachment before we departed. I complemented him on having his concealed, thanked him again for the ride and hopped on the trail. I carried that watermelon switching between both shoulders and carrying it with both my hands in front. Joe and I split the distance to the falls.
Earned watermelon by Dismal Falls was very gratifying. I must say we were probably the only thru hikers who have ever carried a watermelon to Dismal Falls. Most thru hikers would say beer or watermelon? The easy choice for them would be beer.
Fly fishing was challenging. The streams were small and a 9 ft. pole was difficult to maneuver. Plus wearing vasque sandals seemed slightly slick on the rocks. Caught two knotty heads and missed several trout. More focus and more practice will prove plentiful trout.
20-25 thru hikers are camped by Dismal Falls. Our mileage and lack of zeroes have us competing with 18-20 mile a day hikers. Good company!

Duct tape chair by Dismal.
Up from Dismal. Didn't take a picture of Dismal Falls but it was beautiful.
Go that way!
